CocaCola Did Not Invent Santa But They Did Shape Him

Many people believe CocaCola created Santa’s red suit but this is only partly true. Santa was already shown in red before CocaCola ads. However, CocaCola played a major role in fixing this image in popular culture. In the 1930s, illustrator Haddon Sundblom created a series of CocaCola Christmas advertisements. His Santa was round and friendly, warm and human like and always in a bright red coat with white fur.

These ads were printed worldwide and repeated every year, making this version of Santa the dominant global image. CocaCola didn’t invent Santa but they helped cement the red suit into Christmas history.

Why Red Works So Well

Beyond history, there are simple reasons red became the permanent choice. Red symbolizes energy, joy, warmth and celebration. Red contrasts strongly with winter snow. Red is already a major Christmas color.
